Admin Post: Introduction post
Jul. 17th, 2025 02:27 pmHi, and welcome to
fan_writers! This is a comm for meta about writing. Please post or link your writing theory, tips, techniques, and other writing meta here. As the name suggests, our primary context is fanfiction, but original-fiction writers are also very welcome. We're just here to geek out about writing!
fan_writers is intentionally a Dreamwidth-centric comm. Things you can post here:
Feel free to raise issues or problems you've encountered while writing, and ask for general advice or thoughts, eg, suggestions for overcoming writer's block, or tips for dusting off a long-neglected WIP. We're hoping for some thoughtful discussions; lurkers are also welcome, of course.

Here's code for the promo banner that links back to the comm. You can just copy the contents and post it wherever.
And if you'd like to, please introduce yourself in the comments, either using this template (skip anything you don't want to answer) or freeform.
- meta about writing, directly on the comm itself
- links to meta about writing elsewhere on Dreamwidth (public posts only!)
- links to posts on other platforms only if a) you're including significant context/explanation/reaction along with the link (while respecting the copyright of the original post), and b) you want to discuss the topic in comments here
- announcements of writing challenges, events and other communities related to the writing process. That is, multifandom writing productivity comms and challenges like Get Your Words Out or Ushobwri; this is not a place for promoting fanworks exchanges like Yuletide.

Current fandoms, if any: Still noodling away at canon divergences for Legend of Drizzt but anything I have ever written for is on the table with me. I am hoping to get sparked for a new fandom immersion; the LoD thing is five years old and I need a new main fandom for fresh ideas.
Categories you write: I used to write angst and darkfic a lot. I've... stopped, mostly. Gen, het, slash, ace, poly - all on the table. Unless I explicitly state the character is Cis and Straight and Allo, they likely aren't.
Three sentences about you and your writing: I love drabbles (true drabbles of 100 words). I enjoy figuring out crossovers. I prefer to write between the scenes if I am writing canon-compliant, but rarely do these days.
Favourite genres: Fantasy and Science-Fiction of various stripes.
Your writing strengths: Concise use of words.
Writing subjects you're most interested in: Getting an idea for how people do it. I constantly run into ... but that's not something that works for me? Yet I like seeing it, and sometimes adapting it.
Percentage chance you'll post to the comm in the next two months: LOL. Umm, kinda strong? Unless of course life explodes.
Anything else you want to say: Hi everyone! And I do write original (I went original to fanfic, not the other way around) at

Date: 2025-07-20 06:01 am (UTC)Hi, Asp! Welcome! :-)
I love drabbles (true drabbles of 100 words).
*high fives you* *and again for the between/missing scenes* :D
I constantly run into ... but that's not something that works for me? Yet I like seeing it, and sometimes adapting it.
*nodnod* Yeah, it's all about picking, choosing and adapting techniques and hacks, isn't it? Hopefully you'll find some useful stuff here, over time. :D

Offline location: Florida, U.S.A.
Current fandoms, if any: Pokémon, Sonic the Hedgehog, Megami Tensei, My Little Pony, the Nasuverse, Marvel, DC, and more (mostly in the realm of animanga and video games)
Categories you write: (see below)
Three sentences about you and your writing: “Wannabe writer, degenerate weeb, pretentious pedant, and edgelord extraordinaire” as per my profile page as of posting; as someone who’d brand themselves as at least some sort of anti-realist(?) besides, such bleeds into my attitude about art more specifically. Not only do I take every bit of theory I come across as at best a rule of thumb to take with a pinch of salt for my purposes, but when putting myself to brass tacks I don’t like the idea of ‘defining’ what I write beyond (what I gather of) whatever informs it—or whatever other folks have to say about it in turn. All that being said, I anticipate inducing a fair few eye-rolls around here…
Favourite genres: Keeping the above in mind, I can at least feel comfortable saying that solidly absurdist dramedy is about the most surefire way to my heart—think stuff like YouTube abridged series or The Amazing World of Gumball. More broadly speaking, though, playing off of the psychological and philosophical is what’s wont to pique my deeper interest; especially so if it slants some kind of chūnibyō besides…
Your writing strengths: Also with the (further) above in mind, I’ve at least been complimented regularly on my breadth of vocabulary—and recently on my use of such being to both efficient and poetic ends in my prose. Most recently, I’ve received feedback that I can apparently convey a sense of ‘mysticism’ well…which I’ll certainly take in stride.
Writing subjects you're most interested in: Intertextuality is just about the only thing I can entertain in the arts wholesale—how a single piece of creation culminates from all that came before it, only to then refract into countless multitudes of its own as soon as it’s so appraised. As far as theory goes, then, the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of such claims and conclusions is usually of vastly more interest to me than the ‘what’; any broader insights as to worldviews and (senti)mentalities such questions might further lead to, even more so.
Percentage chance you'll post to the comm in the next two months: ~5-10% (Primarily because, even amongst posts I could link to in post right now, I’m not sure if I have any that aren’t too specific to my own writing prospects—but also because a few of said prospects will likely be taking up the bulk of my time for more than the next two months besides)
Anything else you want to say: Uh…hi!

but when putting myself to brass tacks I don’t like the idea of ‘defining’ what I write beyond (what I gather of) whatever informs it—or whatever other folks have to say about it in turn.
I feel the same, but in a less esoteric way, I think. ;-) I'm generally just more interested in telling the story I'm telling than writing to specific genres or tags. But maybe that's not what you meant?
Anyway, hope you enjoy the comm!

Current fandoms, if any: 镇魂 | Guardian (TV) has been my primary fandom since late 2018; occasionally I also dabble in Korean dramas, but I consider myself mostly serially monofannish (my previous major fandoms were Due South and White Collar)
Categories you write: gen, m/m, f/f, occasional m/f, poly, romance, world-building, missing scenes
Three sentences about you and your writing: I lean more canon-setting than AU, and I love exploring and expanding the world of canon using minor characters and OCs. I started out in fandom with a pretty strong focus on m/m slash, but from 2009 to about 2014, my primary ship was m/m/f (Peter/El/Neal in White Collar), and I do like some variety, especially since I tend to stay in fandoms for 5+ years. I love drabbles, ficlets, and longer fic, and poetry; in previous fandoms I've had a blast writing post-as-I-go WIPs, but I haven't done much of that in Guardian, for some reason.
Favourite genres: shipfic, friendship fic, worldbuilding, in-world politics, case fic, intimacy being hard, occasional smut
Your writing strengths: thoughtful exploration of worldbuilding, using ensembles and minor characters, and getting the character voices right
Writing subjects you're most interested in: plot is my nemesis, so anything that helps with that; also just general nuts-and-bolts technical stuff
Percentage chance you'll post to the comm in the next two months: 100% ;D
Anything else you want to say: I've been in online fandom since 2004. My favourite LJ writing comms back in the day were

Current fandoms, if any: Schitt's Creek. I dabble in a few others.
Categories you write: Het, slash, gen. Right now mostly slash, just because there's only one pairing I write a lot of.
Favourite genres: Found family, hurt/comfort.
Your writing strengths: Dialogue is my strength, as well as getting inside the heads of characters.

Online locations: Here and Facebook, and that's pretty well it.
Favourite genres: SF, some fantasy. I have a collection of postapocalyptic books, mostly on Kindle. Zombie apocalypse, deadly plague, EMP, you name it, I've read it. SF involving space travel, eg. The Expanse. Murderbot as books. Ann Leckie. C.J. Cherryh.
Current fandoms. I haven't watched a lot lately, but did enjoy Murderbot. Past fandoms: Babylon 5, Supernatural, From. There's a joke about male Supernatural fans, to which I'd have to say guilty on both counts.
I've been writing since I knew how to, and am a published author, though few outside Australia would have heard my name. That's okay. Haven't been writing much for the last few years due to work/angst/problems, but that's gone away now.
Writing strengths: I generally finish things. I'm careful about the details or I try to be. Character-oriented.
Categories - Mostly slash, in fanfiction, because I'm concentrating on two characters atm and they're both male. Mature level on A03, most of it. I keep any explicit stuff under another name.

Three sentences about you and your writing: Recently, I've gotten back into fanfiction as a way of playing through writing again. I have an MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults and I'm trying to sell my picture book manuscripts. For original work, I write picture books (fiction and nonfiction) for children and speculative poetry and short stories for adults.
Favourite genres: Fanfic (reading and writing): OCs; Original (reading): narrative nonfiction microhistories, speculative poetry; Original (writing): speculative poetry, contemporary queer romance
Your writing strengths: Brevity
Percentage chance you'll post to the comm in the next two months: 100% depends on what's going on in my life

Current fandoms, if any: Stargate Atlantis is the main one, but I also write a lot in The Sentinel, Trixie Belden Mysteries, and The Three Investigators.
Categories you write: mostly slash, though one of my crossover fandoms is m/f. But I've also written femslash, gen, and poly. Depends on the fandom and the story to be told.
Three sentences about you and your writing: I like to keep my stories grounded in reality as much as possible, so I do lots of research. I love the challenge of writing AUs, keeping the characters recognizable and finding ways to tie-in canon. I get inspired by everything from books to commercials to song lyrics to movie plots. (I'm always asking myself, "Can I McShep this?")
Favourite genres: AUs, supernatural stories, domestic family stuff, fusions
Your writing strengths: I think I'm really good at keeping characters in-character despite the AU setting I might drop them into. And people seem to really like my OC characters.
Writing subjects you're most interested in: Character dynamics - how they relate to each other, how their relationship (platonic or otherwise) makes them relate to themselves, how they react under pressure
Percentage chance you'll post to the comm in the next two months: I'd say a solid 70%. I can be chatty. ::grins::

Three sentences about you and your writing: I had a productive period in 2019/2020 when I explored writing in English, but it always felt unnatural to me. I have been suffering from writer's block for the past decade, and for five years, I've been sitting on this One Big Story (in German) I wish I could finish. I make a Spotify playlist for every vague story idea (this one is the latest).
Favourite genres: I had a phase when I mostly produced humor/crack (I have one story that consists entirely of silly dog puns), but I also like to explore angst and romance. With age, my writing focus has become more slice-of-life.
Your writing strengths: Dialogue!
Writing subjects you're most interested in: Complex relationships, uncomfortable truths, humans being gloriously ridiculous.
Percentage chance you'll post to the comm in the next two months: About my writing? 0 % (because I lack the inspiration). Cheering others on or reacting to posts? 50 %. Life is currently very stressful, so if I'm not active, it's probably because I don't find the time.
Anything else you want to say: I think I once saw a PostSecret that said something like: "Out of everything that depression took from me, I miss my words the most." I feel that one deeply.

Current fandoms, if any: None at the moment, sadly. I write predominantly original fiction.
Categories you write: In fanfic, mostly m/f or m/m -- I just haven't had a big fannish f/f OTP to date. In original fiction, I've written more m/f and f/f.
Three sentences about you and your writing: I write fantasy and romance. Most of my stuff has jokes in it. I like stories that combine light and dark -- fun stories that have some substance to them -- and I like a happy ending.
Favourite genres: Slice of life, crossovers or AUs or cracky premises that actually work, tropes written with emotional plausibility, books about women's interiority by dead white ladies of the kind reprinted by Persephone Press and Virago.
Your writing strengths: Dialogue, characterisation, voice.
Writing subjects you're most interested in: Anything really.

Current fandoms, if any: Stuck in the 90s and stuck in Stargate Atlantis. Have written in Voyager, MCU, Person of Interest, a few random others. Also original.
Categories you write: Generally m/m
Three sentences about you and your writing: I've been writing since the mid 90s and like the puzzle of making things cannon compliant, but also the fun of making AUs very plausible in the details. I'm a seat-of-the-pants writer; if I've outlined a story, I'm not interested in writing it because I know how it ends.. Often I write in response to an image, either in my head or from a reverse bang (I miss the SGA reverse bang).
Favourite genres: Pretty broad in fanfic, tending toward Sci-Fi in reading pro-fic
Your writing strengths: I try to pace every sentence to work well if read aloud, but never been podfic'ed. I've been complimented on character voice, details (military, police), and plot.
Writing subjects you're most interested in: Pacing, mostly. Good editing.
Percentage chance you'll post to the comm in the next two months: 10-20%? I've never been in a comm like this or had/sought people to talk about writing with.

Categories you write: M/M, gen, poly, occasional femslash
Three sentences about you and your writing: Writing is harder for me than other creative outlets, and I distract myself from sitting down to write with art and podfics. Because it's harder I often value my completed fics more than my other works, and look back in amazement on past years when I was somehow able to writeup a storm. I'm slowing down as I get older, running into more resistance.
Favourite genres: I like AUs and somewhat cracky plots with romance mixed in - not big on angst. Usually sci-fi or fantasy settings, and I like historical AUs. Also enjoy writing poetry.
Your writing strengths: I think I'm pretty good at character voices and dialogue, getting a period feel, and SPAG.
Writing subjects you're most interested in: plot and structure, pacing, overcoming resistance and blocks.

Three sentences about you and your writing:I write at the intersection of my current fictional favorites and whatever history and/or science non-fiction I'm currently reading. I enjoy the research the most, followed by the sketching out of the plot. I think many more things than I will ever say out loud or write down.
Favourite genres: hard sci fi, mystery, horror (especially horror that addresses colonization and other historical/contemporary injustices)
Your writing strengths:I like my writing a lot, though it isn't to everyone's taste. I enjoy writing setting descriptions and dialogue and writing within constraints.
Writing subjects you're most interested in:AI, philosophy, outer space, the bottom of the ocean, the future, mythology
Percentage chance you'll post to the comm in the next two months:I have no idea. I'm starting a new job on August 1st that is likely to be pretty all-consuming, at least for a while, so I'm likely to be a lurker in the immediate future.

Categories you write: Slash and gen, generally.
Three sentences about you and your writing: I write a lot of dialogue, crackfic, and drabbles. I've been doing drabbles since 2003 as a writing exercise and they've taught me so much. I write entirely in Scrivener.
Favourite genres: Sci-fi/fantasy.
Your writing strengths: My strength is dialogue. My weakness is description and action.
Writing subjects you're most interested in: Interpersonal relationships, friendships and family relationships, and how changing one thing can change or not change other things. I believe all characters have agency, so even if something "goes wrong" for one characer, others will find ways to work around it, and it's fun to explore that. Categories you write: yes. I am particularly fond of femslash and nb characters, but I'll write anything. Love to do aro and/or ace stuff, find polyamory complicated but fun, love QPRs, mentorship and friendship give me life.
Three sentences about you and your writing: I love writing and have been writing for basically all of my life, whether original works or fanfic. I've recently gotten back into doing original stuff again after mostly writing for fanfic exchanges for years. I love the community spaces the internet can provide for writers of all sorts, and I'm excited to see what this one becomes. <3
Favourite genres: Fantasy and science fiction. This is very broad, I know. xD
Your writing strengths: Voice, I'm told. The rhythm and flow of my sentences. Poetics and prosody.
Writing subjects you're most interested in: idk ask the people who read my stuff? xD Some things which come to mind: Nature, trauma, loyalty, community, kink, grief, bodies, magic, exploration, god shit.

Current fandoms, if any: I've never really considered myself a "fannish" person, but I've recently fallen *hard* for The Raven Cycle. I'd like to dip into Star Trek fandom but find myself intimidated by it.
Categories you write: I'm mostly interested in writing Gen, and would like to write more of it. I'm generally not really interested in shippy stuff or straight-up romance, but a lot of my writing ends up having at least some romantic element to it, usually in some flavor of queer.
Three sentences about you and your writing:
1.) I feel like lately I've been trying to articulate/internalize something of a writing philosophy that emphasizes low-stakes but creatively/emotionally/intellectually fulfilling/stimulating "practice" over particular outcomes.
2.) Sometimes I get in my head about not having "more to show for myself" as a writer, but I'm trying to challenge these thoughts with the idea that what I have to show for myself is, like, a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction that comes with having a rich though somewhat unremarkable creative life.
3.) Also I'm in my forties and only just now discovering things like fanfiction and RPing that have been really crucial in helping me think about the above two things.
Favourite genres: Poetic, introspective, quietly dramatic/angsty slice of life, plus politics/history? I think? I don't know!
Your writing strengths: I really like writing and performing poetry, and I think I've gotten pretty good at bringing more poetic elements into my prose. I also feel like I'm good at exploring the social/political/historical dimensions of inter/intrapersonal dynamics? Or I don't know, that's something I'd *like* to be better at. I also think I'm a pretty good RP partner.
Writing subjects you're most interested in: I think I've probably alluded to this in some of my answers above?
Percentage chance you'll post to the comm in the next two months: I think I'll probably be more active in comments until I get a feel for the place.

Three sentences about you and your writing: I love rare pairs. I usually have a favorite character who is my bicycle. Right now that's the guy in my icon, Deuce Spade. I like bickering and fun dialogues and making my faves kiss.
Favourite genres: I don't know if I have a favorite genre, other than liking romance/shipping being woven in with slice of life or adventure.
Your writing strengths: I'm not sure, a friend did tell me I have a decent sense of place once. I like to think I do well with character dynamics and keeping flaws in place.
Writing subjects you're most interested in: Shipping honestly.
Percentage chance you'll post to the comm in the next two months: We'll see! I'm bad at keeping up with dreamwidth, but I want to post more. But I'm shy.
Anything else you want to say: Nothing much except it's almost time for me to go to work, so hello!

Current fandoms, if any: For writing, Grantchester and Forever Knight. For reading, I don't actually read a ton of fan fiction (because I'd rather use my time to write it lol). Usually Forever Knight when I do. But I'm open to other fandoms and just kinda read whatever when I stumble across an interesting premise or recommendation.
Categories you write: Mostly gen. Some slash. Getting slashier lately because I am Invested in a canonical m/m ship on Grantchester.
ThreeTwo sentences about you and your writing: Writing fan fiction has been a wonderful creative outlet for me. I particularly enjoy exploring gaps in canon.Favourite genres: Case fic, character studies, fic that is "episode-like," canon divergent AUs, crack fic
Your writing strengths: Dialog is probably my strongest point. Also pretty good at injecting plot twists.
Writing subjects you're most interested in: I hadn't really thought about it until learning about this community. So open to learning about a lot!
Percentage chance you'll post to the comm in the next two months: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anything else you want to say: I'm looking forward to reading posts in the community :-)

I love writing it as well - it usually flows well, easier to write.
Also pretty good at injecting plot twists.
Go you! Nothing like a good plot twist!

Current fandoms, if any: Sense8 big time
Categories you write: Mostly poly since that's my favorite ship but also some gen. LGBT+ source material and generally big on that scene. Not into AUs or much canon divergence.
Anything else you want to say: I'm pretty new to fanfiction and extremely new to Dreamwidth but I'm hyperfixated on Sense8 at the moment and needed MOAR content. Happy to be back to writing after a long dry spell, and would love to connect and make friends.

Date: 2025-08-04 11:05 pm (UTC)Hi there! That's good news about feeling inspired to write again after a dry spell, and having found a fandom you're loving. \o/ We're just starting here and it's been great seeing people get involved, so I'm sure you'll find people to interact with about writing fanfic, and writing in general. Welcome to the comm!

Categories you write: Het mostly, followed by gen and very occasional f/f
Three sentences about you and your writing: I write in creative bursts interspersed with dry spells. I love to delve into character's motivations, feelings, and actions. I'm a fandom hopper and have written for dozens of fandoms.
Favourite genres: Angst, introspection, romance
Your writing strengths: Characterization and dialogue

Current fandoms, if any: Pokémon (mostly Gameverse, mostly X&Y, with a little of Go thrown in) that's about it right now as far as "actively involved" lol...
Categories you write: all kinds, but the bulk of my work is M/M with some F/M/M thrown in.
Three sentences about you and your writing: I've basically had writer's block all year and it's really getting me down but I'm trying to stay hopeful. I like writing about the dynamics and relationships between characters the most, no matter what kind (platonic, romantic, antagonistic, a secret fourth thing...) I started out writing in my native language (French), then switched to English exclusively, and now in the last few years I tend to alternate, although I still write largely in English.
Favourite genres: I am very bad at genres lol. I guess technically most of what I write (and read) is romance? Is smut a genre? lmao
Your writing strengths: I've been told I'm good at dialogue and general character interactions. I'd like to think I'm able to thread the needle between overly flowery and appropriately poetic when it comes to narrative prose, but that might be in the eye of the beholder :P
Writing subjects you're most interested in: Definitely writer's block right now! Otherwise, I'm always interested in writing tips and tricks in general (pacing, plotting, worldbuilding...)
Percentage chance you'll post to the comm in the next two months: I've only posted Once so far and I guess this is technically my second time... I'm so blocked that I kind of feel like it's not my place to offer advice or insight right now haha, but I've been enjoying lurking and peeking at the ongoing conversations!
Anything else you want to say: I'm available if anybody needs help with French for a fic! o7
