Just to say that if I appear off grid a bit in the next few days, it's not intentional. I'm supposed to be getting my wifi upgraded tomorrow, but given my rubbish track record with technology, not feeling confident it will go smoothly (not helped by stories such as my one coworker having Openreach cancelling on her and my other coworker keeps sharing a story of how they kept his daughter waiting for 7 months in London. At least I have something already so if they do cancel I can still use it, so luckier than them.

Ramble ramble ramble.

So I keep trying to do ramble posts re fannish stuff and keep failing miserably. Maybe this year will be the year I'm more successful in that.

Supposing you see a show, or a film, that's adapted from a book. Do you find it jarring if it goes in a completely different direction from the original, or actually enjoy the change? It's something I was thinking about after having seen the first episode of 56 Days (I read the book when it had not long since been released). For anyone not familiar with either but considering checking out, I've cut anything specific to that canon.

Okay, so at the time the book came out (summer 2021) some did feel that it was a bit too soon for that particular thing featuring much in books and shows (a few years on with a bit of distance from it, maybe it's easier. But that's a whole separate discussion anyway).

When the eventual outcome is wildly different to the original, does that jar with you or do you just go with it? I can remember wondering why exactly an old Miss Marple once years ago changed the identity of one killer in The Body in the Library, and also how exactly there could be an adaptation of Sara Shepard's The Perfectionists books without the character Julie and Parker considering how pivotal they were to the plot (considering that was canned after one season, I may not have been the only one!) If it's just something like an actor not being how I'd pictured someone in the books, I don't really think anything of that (although I've heard Mum plenty of times saying things like "He is not So and so!" in that situation.)

I simply can't stop smiling at the fact that Turner Classic Movies aired the film Gaslight during Trump's State of the Union address last night. Click yesterday at the TCM Schedule online; you'll see it.

Seriously: every time I thought of this today, it made me smile. Peak trolling, indeed - I'd call it epic trolling! Makes me want to hug the programmers at TCM!

Plus it is such a great noir film, one of Ingrid Bergman's best roles, for which she won her first Oscar (though my favorite role of hers will always be Casablanca). Charles Boyer and Joseph Cotton are great in it as well. A young Angela Lansbury is in it, too.

Took the sunny weather and relatively warm temperatures today to powerwash the backyard. It's actually really fun and just seeing how clean the stones look after... makes me feel oddly accomplished. My arm is in pain from 4h of constant vibration and holding down the lever on the powerwasher, but I'm proud!

Hope being outside working so long doesn't make my strange cold symptoms worse. They're a tad better than yesterday but still icky-annoying.

  • Exchanges:

[community profile] fffx is having a delay, and meanwhile [community profile] highadrenalineexchange is in sign-ups. As things currently stand, FFFX should reveal right at the HA deadline, which isn't optimal, and if there's another delay, it will be even less optimal. Two 10k exchanges, overlapping - oops?

And yet somehow I'm still signing up for HA! Because I want to be writing, and I know it will reliably make me write. So far this year hasn't gone great writing-wise, and I need it to get better because I always feel better when I'm writing ...

Of course it may turn out that no one else signs up who wants anything I can write, and the whole thing will be moot anyway. *g* Fingers crossed!

  • Comments:

Over at the Guardian Slo-Mo Rewatch, things have gone a little more quiet in the comments than I'd like, but I can't exactly complain because I've been so busy I've fallen behind myself a few times. Including right now. And I'm also a bit behind on AO3 comments - on older stuff, that is; I'm caught up on my most recent fic, including the spam comment I got today. (It's so frustrating when there's so few comments to begin with, and then one of them is spam! *grumbles*) I'm going to see if I can catch up at least on some of it tonight.
In conclusion, still in desperate need of a TARDIS. *g*

How's everyone else doing? Anyone else doing HA?

This was Adulting day. I feel both accomplished and slightly annoyed.

I used to eat adulting with a spoon, but since I've retired I try to keep it away with a big stick.

On a completely different topic, I am looking forward to seeing the movie Project Hail Mary. I must have read the book three times since it came out, and the trailers look awesome.
rionaleonhart: goes wrong: unparalleled actor robert grove looks handsomely at the camera. (unappreciated in my own time)

This post will consist of various silly Goes Wrong Show-related things I've posted to Tumblr recently!

I posted a poll to Tumblr, asking people for their favourite member of the Cornley Drama Society. The poll closed at 149 votes with Trevor firmly in first place (27.5%), followed by Chris (21.5%), Max (13.4%), Vanessa (10.7%), Annie and Dennis (8.7%), Jonathan (3.4%), Robert and Sandra (2.7%), and Lucy (0.7%).

(I don't think Lucy is an official member of the drama society, but I created this poll to see how things had changed in the three years since [tumblr.com profile] personinthepalace asked the same question, so I thought I'd better make sure I had exactly the same options.)

I'm surprised and a little wounded by my beloved Robert's unpopularity! I'm just going to have to love him hard enough for everyone. (This will not satisfy him.)

Anyway, I wrote a little snippet of the characters reacting to the results:

The Cornley Drama Society react to my character popularity poll. )

Another poll I've contemplated recently was this one from [tumblr.com profile] questions-about-blorbos: Would you let your blorbo tie you up and do whatever they wanted with you?

My immediate reaction to this was 'oh, GOD.' Awful!! I think the only one of my blorbos who I actually find sexually attractive is Robert Grove of The Goes Wrong Show, but any sexual encounter with him is guaranteed to be regrettable, and involving bondage would be catastrophic. He ties me up and then gets distracted by an argument with Chris and then rehearses without rest for several days straight, and I am left tied to his bed for seventy-two hours.

Whilst I currently answer blorbo-related polls with Robert in mind, on account of being actively insane about him, the character I usually call on for these polls is Light Yagami of Death Note. Also a terrible idea to let him tie you up! I'm not sexually interested in him, he's not going to be sexually interested in me, and, perhaps most crucially: if he does want to tie me up, it's going to be because he wants to either kill me or frame me for murder. All things considered, I'd rather he didn't.

Finally: for Valentine's Day, I posted a Valentine's message from Robert Grove.

Please accept this as an extremely belated token of my affection for all of you.

I did spend my Presidents Day holiday finishing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (~475 hours, says my Switch 2 app). There was no story left to be mined anywhere -- though of course there are still Koroks, Kilton Medals, treasure chests -- so I made a story production of the endgame for my Link. Read more... )

It's without doubt a game I feel I wish could go on and on, though it's also right and proper for a story to have an end and thereby a shape and a point, and I wouldn't want that any other way. I think BOTW really is as good as everyone says.

Yet I chose to make my next game Skyward Sword, the first in the story timeline, instead of BOTW's sequel, Tears of the Kingdom. The story should get to breathe in my imagination, I feel. I have a couple of fanfics I would like to try to write.

Cup warm water

spoonful vinegar
Cover and leave for two days.

Which is fine as far as it goes, only... what is it? What does it do?

Anyone?

Challenge 4:

Make a Top Ten list for your favourite relationships in media and tell everyone what you love about them. This covers all kinds of relationships - romantic, sexual, platonic, professional, rivals, acrimonious, family, found family, something else not mentioned here. So, bring out your friends, lovers or enemies, whether canon or fanon. If it involves two or more people interacting in some way, it counts, so go wild!

  1. The first one that comes to mind is Rush and Young from Stargate Universe. One of the joys of SG1 is the relationship between Jack and Daniel (the military leader and the scientist,) and SGU posits 'what if this central and vital relationship was instead between two people who couldn't trust or rely on each other at all? Wouldn't that be fun?' And yes, yes it was. The show does a fantastic job at making the audience nearly... so nearly throw our sympathies completely behind one of them, only to pull the rug out from under us and start feeling that maybe the other one is right after all. I love it.

  2. In one of those love triangles that are completely calling out for polyamory, I love the relationship between Roy Kent, Jamie Tartt and Keeley Jones on Ted Lasso. Roy and Jamie go from being mortal enemies to best friends, while Keeley goes from going out with Jamie to going out with Roy, to going out with neither of them but also being in the best friend triad. Seriously, they should all date each other.

  3. Lan XiChen and Jin GuangYao from The Untamed. My goodness, talk about love at first sight! And then JGY saves LXC's life and nurses him back to health and wins the war for him and makes sure he has enough help to rebuild his sacked sect... and then the guy who broke his little brother's heart tells him that JGY is evil? Does not compute. To me the special thing about LXC is that you can see how he would have given JGY a fair hearing even after everything came to light, had he not been tricked into acting rashly. Those Lans do love well, even if not always wisely.

  4. I should say 'the relationship between Celeborn and Galadriel' because I have written about it a lot. The thing about it is that I had to think about it a lot if I wanted to write Celeborn at all, because it's a huge deal for him. I personally don't really care about it, except in the sense that I care about him. I think it says good things about him, though, that he's at least not the sort of insecure, weak minded little man who is intimidated by a strong woman. So I tend to write him as having the kind of self-assurance that is indistinguishable from humility - he doesn't need to prove anything to anybody.

  5. Qui-Gon Jinn + the Jedi Council. This is another case of what I think of as humility, and many other people see as inflexible stubbornness and pride. I see Qui-Gon as someone who follows the will of the Force wherever he thinks it guides him. Given that the Jedi are called a religion, I think this can be seen as having a strong faith and therefore praiseworthy, even if it means that some people blame him for unleashing Vader on the universe. An interesting case study on how an established religion tries to contain one of their troublesome saints.

  6. Loki + the gods/the Avengers/basically everyone. Like most queer kids I felt an immediate kinship with Loki the mythological figure, who was outcast and blamed for everything, even things he clearly hadn't done. Initially therefore I was very keen to get him forgiven and accepted into a less judgemental group. However, as time went on I started to appreciate why a group might have problems with a character who can't see a boundary without wanting to cross it. Now I'm like 'I still hope he gets redeemed but I think it's going to take someone a lot stronger than me to handle it.'

  7. Khan/Joachim (from Star Trek, the Wrath of Khan) and Ra/Anubis (Stargate the movie.) Possibly even Jin GuangYao/Su MinShan. I'm putting these together because I do love the homoerotic tension of a villain with his chief henchman who is slavishly devoted to him. Not much else to say, just... the love! From terrible people to terrible people! There's something really poignant about it.

  8. General Hux + his father. Hux's father was a child brainwasher who invented the brainwashing techniques that were done on First Order troopers. And he hated his son, while Hux both returned that hatred but also secretly yearned for his father's approval. How much was Hux brainwashed by his father too? No one knows. A toxic relationship but very interesting if you're trying to assign blame to Hux for being such a piece of shit. How much is he responsible for what he is? Can he be saved or is he too far gone? These are the questions the very tiny Hux fandom is asking itself.

  9. Colonel Young + David Telford from SGU. What the heck is going on there? These two are apparently the best of friends while Telford is doing his level best to sabotage Young at nearly every occasion. Things get better after Telford is discovered to be brainwashed and working for the baddies, but he still tries to blow up an allied civilian planet at one point. And yet Young forgives him again and again, even for breaking up his (failing) marriage and making a move on his wife. I think 'what the heck is going on there?' sums it up entirely.

  10. Jack/Ianto. I almost forgot this one but I was so obsessed with it at the time. What a trailblazer of a TV relationship it was! You know, Ianto's shrine is still there in Cardiff. People still visit and bring flowers. I thought Ianto was a very interesting character - he is probably the original of the fandom ghost, that sharply dressed but surprisingly lethal twink that turns up in every fandom given time. Or maybe he just hit that archetype by accident. Jack was less interesting imo, but also a trailblazer for his time.

Title: "A Night at the Lanes"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble, Clara Oswald, original character
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 6632

Summary: (Blue Rain AU) In repayment of a favor from his colleague Dave, Jon takes Donna, Dave, and Dave's girlfriend Clara out for a night of bowling.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes: Nothing special here. This is mostly intended to introduce new characters for the future: Dave, Jon's colleague who's a mechanic in his group and who'd been mentioned in Blue Rain but never actually appeared, and Dave's girlfriend Clara.

I did notice that while selecting character tags on AO3, "Clara Oswald" is subsumed by "Clara Oswin Oswald", which is weird to me, that the splinter's tag is considered dominant, not the companion's tag. Personally, I'd have three separate tags for Clara Oswald, Oswin Oswald, and Clara Oswin Oswald, since they're all different characters, but if I couldn't, I'd definitely make "Clara Oswald" the dominant tag.

Here we go, yo

I'm recently getting back into reading comics, and a few days ago I read The Deaths of Vic Sage.

Unfortunately, this was pretty underwhelming. To start off with, I can’t say I felt very invested in any of the characters.

Vic feels kind of … Rorschach-ish at times, for lack of a better word. Now, I know his original characterization by Ditko provided some inspiration for Rorschach. Maybe the portrayal of Vic in this comic has more in common with his original personality; I can’t say, as I’ve never read those original stories. But he still does come across as a less interesting version of Rorschach at times, what with his black and white morality, conspiracy tendencies, and even his habit of sometimes saying, “Hrm.”

But I don’t feel like I’m given much of a reason as to why he developed these philosophies in any of his lives, beyond the city being corrupt.

Yeah, so, about the past lives plot line — I’m not compelled by it here, and I don’t feel like the writing gets across why there’s something significant about him having different names during each lifetime. The story keeps telling me that it’s significant, but not why.

Or did you?

It feels like I'm in the beginning stages of getting sick. Scratchy throat, icky taste, feeling exhausted, etc. Of course I'm inclined to complain about getting sick during PTO, but then I remembered that this tends to happen because the immune system stops working overtime during time off, so... it's not so much "can't believe my immune system would let me down like this" and moreso "damn, you must have been working hard these past weeks!"

And, well, flu is going around, vaccination or not.

In other news, I read 20 pages of Lucy Undying! Progress.

Okay, so I decided that instead of making a separate blog for my most self-indulgent writing, I'm gonna post it here, but it'll be friends-locked. Comment on this post if you would like access to this type of writing!

This kind of writing will mostly consist of OC x canon stuff, self insert x canon stuff, and meta posts that are me being just completely sincere and unironic about how much I love a particular character and how much they mean to me. If that sort of thing isn't your cup of tea, you probably won't enjoy those sorts of posts. Otherwise, drop a comment below and lemme know if you want access!

If I don't add you, it's nothing personal. I'm just kind of an anxious and paranoid person sometimes. However, if we've interacted some, it's more than likely I'll give you access to this type of writing.
